Your Desk Job Called. It Wants Its Neck Pain Back.

4 min read

Your calendar is full. Your laptop has 27 tabs open. Your shoulders appear to be applying for a promotion to ear level.

Then you finish work, check your phone and head to the gym, where your neck decides it has already done enough for one day.

Sound familiar? Whether you work downtown or have a work-from-home setup, neck pain from desk work can interrupt everything from your morning commute to your evening workout. If you're searching for massage or physiotherapy in Calgary, here's how to think about your options and give your neck a little more breathing room.

Why does my neck hurt after working at a desk?

Long stretches in one position can leave your neck and shoulders uncomfortable. Stress, poor sleep and changes in activity can contribute, too. A laptop-heavy workday may be one piece of the picture, rather than the whole explanation. NHS neck-pain guidance

The good news: you don't need to hold a perfect posture through every meeting. Even a position that feels comfortable at first can become tiring when you stay there. Regular movement and a setup that suits you are more useful goals than constantly policing your shoulders. NHS Dorset

And that phrase “text neck”? Treat it as a conversation starter about screen habits, rather than an explanation for every ache.

Massage for neck and shoulder tension: what to expect

Massage therapy works with muscles and other soft tissues. For some people, it may offer short-term comfort for neck and shoulder pain. Tell your registered massage therapist what you're feeling, when it started and which activities make it worse. NCCIH massage guidance

Keep the expectations realistic. A 2024 Cochrane review found low-certainty evidence that massage offered little or no improvement over sham massage for several outcomes around 12 weeks in people with subacute or persistent neck pain. That makes promises of a permanent fix hard to justify. Cochrane review

If you're considering massage therapy in Bridgeland, ask how it could fit alongside movement, exercise or another assessment. Share your pressure preferences, too. You can ask for the treatment to be adjusted or stopped.

Physiotherapy for neck pain: build a plan for your actual life

Recurring desk-work neck pain deserves more than a growing collection of saved stretches.

A physiotherapy assessment can explore your symptoms, movement, strength and daily demands. Your physiotherapist may recommend exercises, hands-on treatment, activity adjustments and strategies to practise between appointments. The plan should match what you want to get back to, whether that's comfortable workdays, lifting or weekend adventures. APTA physical therapy guide

At REVIVELAB's physiotherapy clinic in Bridgeland, care may include education, mobility work, functional exercise and progressive strengthening, depending on your assessment. When appropriate and with your consent, your physiotherapist can collaborate with the clinic's massage therapists and other practitioners.

Massage and physiotherapy can overlap. Your symptoms, preferences and assessment should guide the choice; there isn't one universal winner.

Five desk-friendly changes worth trying

For ordinary stiffness without the warning signs below, start gently:

  1. Change position between tasks. Stand, walk to refill your water or take a brief movement break when a meeting ends. Let your calendar work for your neck for once.

  2. Try easy movement. Slowly turn your head within a comfortable range or gently move your shoulders. Skip forceful stretches. Stop if you develop dizziness, tingling, weakness or clearly worsening pain, and get advice.

  3. Bring the work to you. Position your main screen in front of you at a comfortable height and distance. Keep your keyboard and mouse within easy reach, with your shoulders relaxed.

  4. Make your setup adjustable. If a laptop stand helps, pair it with a separate keyboard and mouse so you can position the screen and your hands comfortably.

  5. Keep the basics on the list. Short walks, regular activity and attention to sleep can support your recovery. You don't need to turn every coffee break into a mobility class.

These are starting points. Adjust them to your comfort and any advice you've already received. NHS movement guidance, CCOHS screen setup, CCOHS keyboard setup

Desk job by day, gym session by night?

Your workout doesn't automatically cancel out a long, still workday. Equally, a sore neck doesn't always mean you need to abandon exercise.

You may need to temporarily adjust an activity's intensity, frequency or type, then build back gradually. If lifting, running or another activity keeps triggering symptoms, get guidance on a manageable starting point. NHS Dorset activity advice

For gym recovery, useful goals might include turning your head comfortably, tolerating your workday and gradually returning to your usual training. Your plan should make sense beyond the treatment room.

Quick answers to common neck-pain questions

Should I book massage or physiotherapy first?

If symptoms keep returning, limit activity or leave you unsure what's going on, a physiotherapy assessment is a practical starting point. Massage may be an option for short-term comfort. Tell the clinic about your symptoms when choosing an appointment.

Will a standing desk fix my neck pain?

A standing desk gives you another position to use. Staying in one position can still become uncomfortable, so keep movement and comfort in the plan. NHS Dorset

How many appointments will I need?

That depends on your symptoms, goals and response to care. Ask what progress to look for and when your plan will be reviewed. REVIVELAB's physiotherapy approach includes reassessing progress and adjusting care as needed. What to expect

When to get medical help

Seek urgent medical assessment for new or worsening numbness or weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or neck pain after a significant injury. A severe headache with fever and a stiff neck also needs urgent care. Call 911 for an emergency. If you're unsure where to turn in Alberta, call Health Link at 811. Get checked if pain is worsening or isn't improving as expected. Alberta care guidance, Alberta neck-injury guidance
