Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

Pelvic health concerns can affect daily activities, exercise, sport, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and overall quality of life. Although these concerns are common, many people are unsure where to turn or may feel uncomfortable discussing what they are experiencing.

At REVIVELAB Health & Performance, pelvic health physiotherapy is provided in a private, respectful, and supportive environment. Your concerns, comfort, and personal goals guide every stage of your care.

Your physiotherapist will take the time to understand your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and the activities that matter most to you. Following an individualized assessment, your treatment plan may include education, breathing strategies, mobility work, pelvic floor exercises, strength training, movement retraining, manual therapy, and guidance for returning to exercise or daily activities.

WHAT IS THE PELVIC FLOOR?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues that supports the pelvic organs and contributes to bladder and bowel control, sexual function, core stability, and movement.

Like other muscles in the body, the pelvic floor may experience weakness, tension, coordination difficulties, or changes following injury, pregnancy, childbirth, surgery, or changes in activity. Pelvic health physiotherapy assesses how these muscles function alongside the hips, core, breathing patterns, and the rest of the body.

Who this service is for

  • Pelvic health physiotherapy may be appropriate for women experiencing:

  • Bladder leakage during coughing, sneezing, running, or exercise

  • Increased urinary urgency or frequency

  • Difficulty controlling the bladder or bowel

  • Feelings of pelvic pressure or heaviness

  • Pelvic pain or discomfort

  • Discomfort during sexual activity

  • Changes during pregnancy or following childbirth

  • Abdominal separation following pregnancy

  • Difficulty returning to running, strength training, or sport

  • Concerns related to pelvic floor strength, tension, or coordination

  • Changes following pelvic or abdominal surgery

Every person’s experience is different. An assessment helps determine whether physiotherapy is appropriate and what approach may best support your needs.

PREGNANCY AND POSTPARTUM CARE

Pregnancy and childbirth can affect the pelvic floor, abdominal wall, hips, back, and overall movement. Pelvic health physiotherapy can provide education and individualized guidance as your body adapts during pregnancy and as you return to daily activity or exercise postpartum.

Care may include breathing and pressure-management strategies, mobility work, pelvic floor and core exercises, progressive strengthening, and guidance for returning to running or other physical activities.

Treatment recommendations are based on your individual assessment, stage of recovery, symptoms, and goals.

ACTIVE WOMEN AND FEMALE ATHLETES

Pelvic health symptoms can occur during running, jumping, lifting, and other forms of exercise. Melissa combines her pelvic health education with her interests in running and strength training to assess how the pelvic floor works with the core, breathing, and the rest of the body during movement.

Treatment may involve pelvic floor coordination, strength and mobility exercises, breathing strategies, load management, and a progressive return to activity. The goal is to help you better understand your symptoms and build confidence in movement.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1. A Private Conversation

Your first appointment begins with a confidential discussion about your concerns, health history, symptoms, daily activities, and goals. You will only be asked for information that is relevant to your physiotherapy care.

2. An Individualized Assessment

Your physiotherapist may assess breathing, posture, mobility, strength, balance, and functional movements related to your symptoms. Each part of the assessment will be explained before it begins.

3. Optional Internal Assessment

In some circumstances, an internal pelvic health assessment may provide additional information about pelvic floor strength, tension, coordination, and function.

An internal assessment is never automatic or required. Your physiotherapist will explain why it is being considered, what it involves, its potential benefits and risks, and any available alternatives. It will only proceed with your informed consent. You may decline any part of the assessment or withdraw your consent at any time without affecting your ability to receive other appropriate care.

4. A Personalized Treatment Plan

Following the assessment, your physiotherapist will discuss the findings with you and recommend a plan based on your needs, preferences, and goals. Treatment may include education, manual therapy, pelvic floor exercises, breathing strategies, mobility work, functional exercise, and progressive strengthening.

YOUR COMFORT AND CONSENT COME FIRST

Pelvic health care should always feel respectful, collaborative, and clearly explained. You are encouraged to ask questions throughout your appointment and participate in every decision about your care.

Consent is an ongoing process. You may pause or stop an assessment or treatment at any time. You may also choose to bring a support person to your appointment if that would help you feel more comfortable.
