A twisted ankle: early home care and a safer return to activity

Being able to take a few steps does not tell the whole story after rolling an ankle. Swelling, bruising and how the injury happened all matter.

This is general education for adults, not a diagnosis or an individualized exercise prescription. Your symptoms, health history and any existing medical advice come first.

What might be behind the symptoms?

A sprain involves injured ligaments, but a fracture or other injury can produce similar symptoms. A painful ankle after a fall may need assessment before home exercise.

Our ankle sprains guide explains the related assessment and care options in more detail.

What you can try at home

Protect the ankle from further injury and reduce painful loading initially. A wrapped cold pack and elevation may help comfort. As symptoms allow and serious injury has been excluded, ask how to restore movement and activity gradually.

Stop a self-care measure if it increases symptoms. If you are unsure whether it is suitable, ask a qualified health professional; do not delay medical care while trying home remedies.

When to seek medical help

Seek urgent assessment for deformity, numbness, a cold foot, severe pain or inability to bear weight. Do not rely on taping to make an unassessed injury safe for sport.

For a medical emergency in Alberta, call 911. Health Link at 811 can help with non-emergency health advice when you are unsure where to go.

How this fits your daily life

  • Team-sport athletes: Bring the injury timeline and any medical instructions. Ask what should be assessed before progressing from drills to contact, changes of direction or competition.
  • Hikers & winter-sport enthusiasts: Tell us about trail elevation, footwear and any repeated symptoms on descents. For winter sports, describe falls and whether an injury received medical assessment.
  • Dancers & movement artists: Bring your rehearsal and performance commitments, and describe whether symptoms occur in floor work, jumps, turns or sustained positions. Discuss what can be modified while the concern is assessed.

Explore the full Who we serve directory for other work, sport and life situations. These examples help you prepare a conversation; they do not mean everyone with the same activity needs the same treatment.

A useful question for your appointment

“What needs to recover before running or changes of direction, and how will balance and confidence be assessed?”

Which REVIVELAB service should you discuss?

  • Physiotherapy — discuss assessment, movement and a rehabilitation plan.

These are options to discuss, not a recommendation to book every treatment. Please speak with a qualified professional at REVIVELAB for an assessment and advice tailored to you.
