THE MOVEMENT JOURNAL

A sports injury: home decisions before returning to practice

The next game can feel urgent, but a good return plan starts with understanding what happened. Pain relief alone is not a clearance to compete.

This is general education for adults, not a diagnosis or an individualized exercise prescription. Your symptoms, health history and any existing medical advice come first.

What might be behind the symptoms?

Sports injuries include many different tissues and mechanisms. A collision, twist and gradual overload should not all be managed with the same exercise sheet.

Our sports injuries guide explains the related assessment and care options in more detail.

What you can try at home

Protect an acutely injured area and avoid repeating the movement to prove it is better. Follow initial medical advice and record swelling or changes in function. Ask what can be modified at practice while the injury is assessed.

Stop a self-care measure if it increases symptoms. If you are unsure whether it is suitable, ask a qualified health professional; do not delay medical care while trying home remedies.

When to seek medical help

Serious trauma, deformity, inability to use a limb or new numbness needs urgent medical care. Suspected concussion requires medical assessment and removal from play; a gym or treatment appointment does not replace that.

For a medical emergency in Alberta, call 911. Health Link at 811 can help with non-emergency health advice when you are unsure where to go.

How this fits your daily life

  • Team-sport athletes: Bring the injury timeline and any medical instructions. Ask what should be assessed before progressing from drills to contact, changes of direction or competition.
  • Injury & surgery recovery: Bring your discharge plan, surgeon's protocol and any imaging reports you have. After a collision, tell us whether you have received medical assessment and ask the clinic about appointment and paperwork requirements.

Explore the full Who we serve directory for other work, sport and life situations. These examples help you prepare a conversation; they do not mean everyone with the same activity needs the same treatment.

A useful question for your appointment

“What must be assessed before returning to drills, contact or competition, and who should coordinate the plan?”

Which REVIVELAB service should you discuss?

  • Physiotherapy — discuss assessment, movement and a rehabilitation plan.
  • Personal training — discuss progressive coaching once clinical restrictions have been clarified.

These are options to discuss, not a recommendation to book every treatment. Please speak with a qualified professional at REVIVELAB for an assessment and advice tailored to you.
