Your first physiotherapy appointment: what to bring and ask

You do not need to arrive at physiotherapy with a diagnosis or the name of a treatment. You might simply know that your shoulder interrupts your sleep, your back is uncomfortable at work, or an injury has made your usual run feel out of reach. Those details are a useful starting point.

At REVIVELAB in Bridgeland, Calgary, physiotherapy brings assessment, education, exercise and hands-on care together around your needs. Here is how to prepare for the conversation so your appointment focuses on what matters to you.

Start with the activities you want back

Before your visit, jot down when the problem began, what makes it noticeable and how it affects your day. Include changes in work, exercise or your usual routine. You do not have to track every symptom perfectly; a few concrete examples are more useful than trying to find the right medical term.

A goal such as walking to work comfortably, lifting your child or returning to a weekly hockey game gives your physiotherapist context. Tell them what you have already tried and whether it helped, made things worse or made no difference.

Bring the information you already have

Relevant medical history, a current medication list and any existing referral, imaging report or post-surgery instructions can help the discussion. Do not arrange new tests just to prepare for an appointment. If you are unsure what is needed, ask the clinic before your visit.

Choose clothing you can move in and ask whether a particular area needs to be accessible for assessment. Bring your questions about appointment length, insurance or direct billing; coverage depends on your own plan. Our treatment prices page is the place to check current fees.

Understand the plan before choosing treatment

A physiotherapy assessment usually includes a discussion of your symptoms and history, followed by movement or physical checks appropriate to your situation. Your physiotherapist can explain the findings, discuss treatment options and help set expectations. An exercise plan, education or hands-on treatment may form part of your care.

You may have seen dry needling in our clinic updates. Mention your interest if you would like to discuss it. It is not a requirement for physiotherapy: suitability, alternatives and your comfort should be part of the conversation.

Questions worth asking

Try asking: What are we working towards first? How will we judge progress? What should I do between visits? What should I do if an exercise increases my symptoms? When should we reassess the plan? You can also ask for instructions to be repeated or written down.

If a plan feels difficult to fit around work or family, say so. A realistic conversation about time, equipment and preferences helps make the next steps clear.
