A knee that hurts on stairs presents a different problem from a knee injured in a tackle. Describe how the pain began and what happens when you load it.
This is general education for adults, not a diagnosis or an individualized exercise prescription. Your symptoms, health history and any existing medical advice come first.
What might be behind the symptoms?
Knee pain can involve several structures. Swelling, locking, giving way and the injury mechanism matter; a pain location alone cannot tell you which tissue is responsible.
Our knee pain guide explains the related assessment and care options in more detail.
What you can try at home
Reduce activities that clearly aggravate the knee and avoid prolonged standing during a painful flare. A cold pack wrapped in a towel may ease symptoms. Do not repeatedly test a painful deep squat or twist.
Stop a self-care measure if it increases symptoms. If you are unsure whether it is suitable, ask a qualified health professional; do not delay medical care while trying home remedies.
When to seek medical help
Seek urgent care if you cannot bear weight, the knee is badly swollen or deformed, or it is hot and red with fever. True locking or repeated giving way needs assessment.
For a medical emergency in Alberta, call 911. Health Link at 811 can help with non-emergency health advice when you are unsure where to go.
How this fits your daily life
- Cyclists & active commuters: Note your typical ride duration, whether symptoms occur on climbs or flat rides, and any recent equipment changes. Photos of your normal setup can help explain the task without replacing an assessment.
- Lifters & strength athletes: Tell us about your current split, recent changes in volume, and the movements you have already modified. You do not need to demonstrate a painful maximum lift to explain the problem.
- New & returning exercisers: Choose one practical goal, such as learning the equipment or building a routine that fits two days a week. Share previous injuries and any medical advice that affects exercise.

A useful question for your appointment
“What is safe to do on stairs today, and what should improve before I return to heavier activity?”
Which REVIVELAB service should you discuss?
