Understanding knee pain
A sore knee after a twist is a different starting point from discomfort that has gradually appeared with running or kneeling at work. Describe how it began, where you feel it and whether you have noticed swelling, locking or a feeling that the knee might give way. Avoid assuming that every painful knee is “runner’s knee”.
At REVIVELAB in Bridgeland, physiotherapy offers a place to discuss your symptoms and work toward a practical rehabilitation plan when appropriate. You can also ask whether medical assessment should come before your appointment.
Understanding what your knee needs to do
Going downstairs, standing from a low seat, kneeling and changing direction can each tell a different part of your story. Bring examples from your day and describe what happens during the activity and afterward. If you run, changes in distance, hills or frequency are useful details.
Your physiotherapist may assess how far the knee bends and straightens, relevant strength and movements you can comfortably perform. Share any previous knee injury, surgery, restrictions or imaging reports so these can be considered.
Returning to stairs, training or sport
If rehabilitation is suitable, discuss a starting level of activity and how you will build from it. Your plan may involve exercises, adjustments to training or everyday tasks, and follow-up to see how your knee responds.
A return to running or sport should reflect your assessment and progress, rather than a fixed deadline. A running assessment is a separate service; ask whether injury care or a running assessment is the appropriate first appointment for you.
Choosing an appointment at REVIVELAB
Our physiotherapy service page introduces Melissa Chea and explains the appointment options. Check our prices page for current fees, or call 403 235 0535 if you need help choosing a visit.
Appointments take place at 217 4 St NE, Unit 105, in Bridgeland, Calgary. Bring any relevant instructions from your surgeon if your knee concern follows an operation; rehabilitation needs to respect those restrictions.
When a knee needs urgent attention
Seek urgent medical advice if your knee is very painful, you cannot move it or bear weight, it is badly swollen or has changed shape, or it locks or gives way. Fever or feeling unwell with a hot, red knee also needs urgent assessment. These symptoms should not wait for a routine physiotherapy visit.
Assessment and treatment options
These are options to discuss after an assessment, not a recommendation to book every service. Your symptoms, health history, goals and preferences guide the plan.
