Pelvic floor symptoms: why more squeezing is not always the first step

Leakage, pressure or discomfort can be difficult to bring up. You can start by describing what you notice and what you want to change; you do not need to arrive with a diagnosis.

This is general education for adults, not a diagnosis or an individualized exercise prescription. Your symptoms, health history and any existing medical advice come first.

What might be behind the symptoms?

Pelvic floor symptoms can involve different issues, so an exercise needs to match an assessment. A supervised programme can check contraction and relaxation rather than assuming everyone needs the same routine.

Our pelvic floor dysfunction guide explains the related assessment and care options in more detail.

What you can try at home

Keep a short record of symptoms and the activities connected with them. Avoid increasing exercises that provoke pain or pressure. Ask about a suitable starting plan instead of repeatedly stopping urine flow as a training exercise.

Stop a self-care measure if it increases symptoms. If you are unsure whether it is suitable, ask a qualified health professional; do not delay medical care while trying home remedies.

When to seek medical help

New inability to urinate, loss of bladder or bowel control with back pain or saddle numbness needs urgent medical care. Blood in urine, fever or pelvic pain also warrants medical advice.

For a medical emergency in Alberta, call 911. Health Link at 811 can help with non-emergency health advice when you are unsure where to go.

How this fits your daily life

  • Pregnancy & postpartum: Tell Melissa about your stage of pregnancy or birth recovery, any medical restrictions, and what you want help with. You can discuss examination options, decline a procedure and ask questions at every step.

Explore the full Who we serve directory for other work, sport and life situations. These examples help you prepare a conversation; they do not mean everyone with the same activity needs the same treatment.

A useful question for your appointment

“What is contributing to my symptoms, and can we discuss assessment and treatment options within my comfort and consent?”

Which REVIVELAB service should you discuss?

These are options to discuss, not a recommendation to book every treatment. Please speak with a qualified professional at REVIVELAB for an assessment and advice tailored to you.
