Understanding hip pain
Tell us where you feel the discomfort: at the front of the hip or groin, along the outside, or around the buttock. Also tell us what brings it on, whether that is getting out of a chair, climbing stairs, lying on your side or returning to the gym. These details help guide the conversation; location alone does not identify the cause.
You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis. At REVIVELAB in Bridgeland, a physiotherapy appointment is one way to discuss your hip symptoms, relevant health history and the activities you want to get back to.
What to bring to your hip assessment
Think about when the pain started and whether your walking, work or training changed around that time. Mention any previous hip or back injury, surgery, medical advice or investigations. Clothing that lets you move comfortably can help with the movement portion of your visit.
Your physiotherapist may look at hip movement, strength and tasks such as walking or getting up from a chair, depending on your symptoms. The assessment helps determine whether rehabilitation is appropriate or another medical opinion is needed.
Make the plan fit your day
Your goal might be walking to work comfortably, sleeping better or getting back to strength training. Discuss which matters most and what currently limits you. If physiotherapy is appropriate, your plan may include exercise, changes to activity and advice you can use between appointments.
Ask how progress will be checked and what to do if symptoms change. There is no single stretch, treatment package or recovery timeline that suits every painful hip.

When to seek medical help first
Severe hip pain after a fall or injury, inability to walk or bear weight, or new loss of feeling after an injury needs emergency medical assessment. Sudden severe pain without an injury, or a hot, swollen hip with fever or feeling unwell, needs urgent medical advice. Do not wait for a routine rehabilitation appointment.
Assessment and treatment options
These are options to discuss after an assessment, not a recommendation to book every service. Your symptoms, health history, goals and preferences guide the plan.
